Dining Privileges
Frequently Asked Questions
Petreans are entitled to dine at Formal Hall free of charge as College guests on three ordinary nights each calendar year. Once you have received your MA or any higher degree, you are also permitted to dine on High Table, providing a Fellow is dining that evening.
Please note that it is not possible to use your dining privileges at lunchtime.
Please contact the Catering Department (email catering@pet.cam.ac.uk) as soon as possible and at least 24 hours in advance, who will be able to advise about availability. In your request, please provide any special dietary requirements.
It is not possible for alumni to book to dine via Upay. Please book by contacting the catering department.
There is no system in place that allows alumni to purchase guest places. However, it has become our practice to allow Petreans to use the second or third of their own privilege to host guests in the main body of hall. Please note that only one guest may be hosted at a time.
Unfortunately, it is not possible for your guests to dine on High Table unless they are hosted by a Fellow who is dining.
If you are dining in the body of hall, you can purchase wine or bring your own and pay corkage from 19:00 in the bar, which is located in the Whittle basement.
Wine is automatically provided to those dining on High Table. If you do not wish to drink wine, please indicate this by turning over your glass. The cost of the wine consumed is normally divided between those dining on High Table and there is a small charge for dessert (coffee, port and sweet wine, nuts etc) on Wednesdays. Please note that if you and/or your guest consume wine or dessert you will be billed for your share of the cost.
Dinner usually commences at 19:30 so please arrive by 19:15. If you have booked for Formal Hall, please enter via F-staircase from 19:20. If you are dining on High Table, please convene in the Combination Room at 19:20 (location subject to change if an event is occurring).
Please note that you may be required to show your email confirmation from catering to a member of the staff at the entrance to the Hall.
The dress code is business attire; alumni are not required to wear gowns but they may do so if they wish.
