College backed Community Garden opens in Cherry Hinton

The Community Garden: a patch of lawn surrounded by a path and borders. A wooden planter doubles up as a bench along one side

The Cherry Hinton Community Garden has been officially opened at a ceremony on 6 July attended by the bursar, Mr Ian Wright. The space will be used by Cherry Hinton Primary School and other local community groups, but will also be open at weekends for local residents and families to enjoy.

Children help with the community garden projectThe site of the garden previously housed a community building known as “the Green Hut” originally built in 1902, but it was necessary to demolish it in 2020 when it was deemed no longer safe. With Peterhouse funding the demolition of the former building, and assisting with getting the land passed over to the local school, space was made for a garden that would provide a community space for Cherry Hinton, as well as improving local biodiversity.

Many volunteers including children from the primary school helped with the planting and ground work and the College gardening team will soon be donating some of our spring bulbs to help the new garden to flourish all year round.
