Gardener

(£19,661 to £22,142 per annum, 37.5 hours per week)

Peterhouse, the oldest of the Cambridge Colleges, has an exciting role of Gardener, which we are seeking to fill.

Our Gardeners are responsible to the Head Gardener for around 9 acres of grounds, including the Fellows’ Garden Deer Park, Scholars’ Garden, Master’s Lodge Garden.  The gardens include areas of herbaceous borders, shrub beds, trees and shrubs, greenhouses for propogation, and more natural areas mostly over 2 sites in the centre of Cambridge. This is an exciting time to join the Gardens team as there are a number of projects which will be very high profile for the College in the near future. This includes a new garden at Cosin Court, in which the post holder can expect to be actively involved.

The successful candidate will be a key member of the Gardens team, supporting the Head Gardener as required. Duties include: care of lawns and ornamental beds; basic maintenance of tools and machinery; care of trees and shrubs, including pruning; greenhouse work, including propagation.

You should possess a real enthusiasm for garden maintenance and development and a drive to achieve the highest possible standards. You will be keen to assist the Head Gardener in development of ideas through to application. You will ideally have a formal horticultural qualification with demonstrable, practical hands-on horticultural experience.  Depending on the skills and interests of the successful candidate, there are likely to be opportunities to take on additional areas of responsibility in the future.

The College provides 25 days holiday per year.  The College provides car parking whilst on duty, which is subject to availability.  The College offers an auto-enrolled pension scheme to eligible employees, after 3 months’ completed service.  Lunch is provided free of charge when on duty over lunchtime (over six hours a day) and when the College kitchens are open

The closing date for completed applications: 8.00am on 24 May 2021
