Rare Books Cataloguer (Research Associate) for the project 'Early Hebrew Printed Books in Cambridge Collections

The post will be available from 1 January 2022 (or as soon after as can be mutually agreed) until 31 December 2024.

(This is a fixed-term, non-renewable post.)

The salary for the post is £33,309 per annum

The College is now seeking to appoint to the above fixed term post, the duties of which will be primarily to produce records for inclusion on the University Library’s catalogue/management system. Those records will include, as a matter of course, a full bibliographical description of each book encountered and as complete as possible a record of copy-specific information, such as the details of binding structures and designs, provenance information and signs of use by readers. The postholder will undertake work in a number of Cambridge collections under the direction of the Perne Librarian at Peterhouse, Scott Mandelbrote.

The Cambridge Colleges and the University Library hold large numbers of printed Hebrew books and of books containing Hebrew collected from the sixteenth century. For the purposes of this project, the intention is to study those books collected up to the royal donation of the library of John Moore to the University Library (1715) and a number of other significant donations in the early eighteenth century. This will enhance our knowledge of and access to a large number of Cambridge collections and provide a coherent basis for further research on the material world and intellectual culture of early modern Hebraism.

The successful candidate will have an excellent working knowledge of early modern Hebrew; the ability to read early modern Hebrew manuscript hands; the ability accurately to identify and describe the copy-specific characteristics of an early modern printed book, and have a good working knowledge of Latin. You will have a degree in a relevant discipline. The cataloguer will be required to create high-quality online catalogue records for printed books in the University’s and the Colleges’ special collections: some training may be available, but relevant experience is highly desirable.
