A statement of support from the Master
I would like to echo the University’s support of Dr Ally Louks, one of our PhD students who passed her viva this week with no corrections, but who became the subject of a number of harassing and offensive messages on social media after tweeting about this achievement on X.
Academia thrives in an environment of open and healthy discourse and there is no justification for hatred, misogyny or threatening behaviour.
We are very glad to hear from Ally that the overwhelming majority of messages she has now received are positive and supportive, and we commend her handling of this situation which has opened up so much discourse and dialogue around her fascinating subject.
On behalf of the Petrean community, I would like to congratulate Dr Louks both on her academic achievement and her admirable responses online.
