Peterhouse JCR Arts Competition
We are pleased to announce the first year of the Peterhouse JCR Arts Competition! This competition has been designed by the JCR, who are a group of undergraduates here at Peterhouse that represent the student body; a bit like a student council would at school.
What does the competition involve?
"There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you"
The competition aims to provide a platform for young artists to creatively share their stories and experiences, utilising the power of art in all forms: from paintings to poems. The theme for this year's competition is 'Everyday Life'.
We would like you to submit a short piece of work that interprets the theme in a medium of your choice. For example; a poem, a photograph, a painting, or via another art form. You will also need to include a short description (maximum 250 words) of how your submission relates to the theme. Please see here for an example submission.
You might wish to recount a period of your everyday routine such as your walk to school. What makes it unique? How does your everyday life help shape you as a person? This reflection on what lies behind the seemingly ordinary or mundane is often at the heart of the study of the Arts and Social Sciences here at Cambridge.
Who can take part?
The Peterhouse JCR Arts Competition is open to students currently in Year 10 or 11 (England and Wales), S3 and S4 (Scotland), and Year 11 and 12 (Northern Ireland) who are educated at a state school in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
In order to validate your submission, you will need to provide the name and email address of a teacher at your school who can support your application.
Submission Guidelines
To enter the competition please make sure that your work and 250 word description are in one single document. This can be a file such as a PDF or DOC, or as an image such as a JPG or PNG. You will then need to complete the submission form found here.
Submissions will close on Friday 18th October at 23:59 pm GMT. We are unable to consider entries which have not been submitted by this deadline.
Prizes
The Peterhouse JCR will shortlist 10 entries based on their interpretation of the theme, and their originality and creativity. These students will be invited to a celebration day at Peterhouse on Thursday 31st October, and will have the opportunity to present their work to the JCR committee members and Peterhouse staff. The JCR will also select an overall winner who will be awarded a prize of £150. Please note the travel reimbursements will be available for eligible students
The 10 shortlisted works will then be displayed virtually in a 'Peterhouse: Everyday Life' Collection on the College website.
