Adrian K Dixon was born in Cambridge in 1948. He was Master of Peterhouse, the oldest College in the University, from 2008 to 2016.

He completed a 6 year term as Editor-in-Chief of European Radiology in December 2013.  He is Emeritus Professor of Radiology at the University of Cambridge, having been Head of the Department of Radiology for 15 years.  He remains an Honorary Consultant Radiologist at Addenbrooke's Hospital and enjoys radiology reporting and teaching. 

After gaining a BA from King's College, Cambridge in 1969 he graduated MB BCh in 1972 after clinical studies at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London.  He then pursued general medicine at Nottingham and obtained MRCP in 1974.  Changing to Radiology he qualified FRCR in 1978.  After spells in Paediatric Radiology (Great Ormond Street) and CT (St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London) he became Lecturer in Professor Sherwood's Department of Radiology in the University of Cambridge in 1979.  His interests to date have mainly centred on developing Body Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging.  He gained his MD with a thesis on Computed Tomography of the lumbar spine in 1988.  He was elected a Fellow of Peterhouse, Cambridge in 1986 where he was Director of Medical Studies until 1994.  He was Editor of Clinical Radiology 1998-2002 and Chairman of the Royal College of Radiologists' Guidelines Working Party 1993-1998.  He has published extensively in Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging and various aspects of effectiveness within Radiology.  He has written and co-edited various books on CT, Anatomy and Diagnostic Radiology.  He was elected FRCP in 1991, Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 1998 and FRCS in 2003.  He was Warden of the Faculty of Clinical Radiology at the Royal College of Radiologists 2002-6 and MR Clinical Guardian to the Department of Health 2004-7.  He has been awarded honorary Fellowship/Membership of the National Radiological Societies/Colleges in Australia/New Zealand, France, Hungary, Ireland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the USA.  He was awarded an Honorary MD by University College Cork in 2011 and Munich in 2013.  He was made President of the CUGC in 2010.  In 2012 he was appointed as a Trustee of the David Ross Educational Trust and in 2013 as a  member of the University Grants Committee of Hong Kong.  In 2014 he was awarded the Gold medal of the European Society of Radiology.
