Maya Feile Tomes is the Lorna Close Fellow in Spanish at Murray Edwards and Director of Studies in Modern & Medieval Languages and Linguistics (MMLL) at Peterhouse, where she is also a Bye-Fellow. Maya originally read Classics at King’s College, Cambridge, where she also obtained her PhD in 2017, and subsequently became Junior Research Fellow in Classics and Modern Languages at Christ’s College, Cambridge. In 2020-21 she was Teaching Assistant in Colonial Latin American Literary and Cultural Studies in the MMLL Faculty. As a researcher she specialises in the literary culture of the early modern (colonial-era) Ibero-American world, focusing on transatlantic literary dialogues, multilingual textual dynamics, poetry and poetics, and classical reception. She also has a special interest in translation in both theory and practice. Most recently she has co-edited a volume on Classics in the Early Americas, with a translation of key texts from the 1550s “Controversy of the Indies” by Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda and Bartolomé de las Casas shortly forthcoming with Oxford University Press (History and Theory of International Law series). In her teaching she ranges widely across undergraduate and graduate papers in the Spanish & Portuguese Section of the MMLL Faculty, as well as in the Faculty of Classics.
