Dr Barnabas Szabo
Dr Barnabas Szabo is a postdoctoral research associate at the Centre for Geopolitics in Cambridge. He obtained his PhD in Comparative History at Central European University (Budapest/Vienna), after completing graduate programs in International Relations/European Studies and Nationalism Studies. Barnabas’ research focuses on the establishment of the early modern British and Spanish unions.
Dr Szabo is especially interested in the wider context of the globalizing commercial and military competition between European powers and the possibilities of emulating other players (France, Holland, Sweden, Austria) discussed in the British/Scottish and Hispanic/Catalan contexts. As the themes orienting European diplomacy in the 1700s – security, economic prosperity, stability, trade, and national interest – are gaining a new urgency today, Barnabas seeks to incorporate an applied history approach into his research.
